Description
Original cold storage container for Liebherr freezer 7422838
The original Liebherr 7422838 cold storage tank is a thermal storage element installed in the roof of the freezer compartment. The element absorbs and accumulates cold during normal operation of the appliance, and releases it back into the compartment during a power outage - this way the cold maintains the low temperature and protects the frozen food. Suitable for Liebherr GP and GN series freezers. Original OEM part with exact dimensions: 175x175x46 mm.
A sudden power outage – and everything you’ve stored in your freezer is in danger. The Liebherr cold storage tank was designed for exactly that: to store “cold reserve” that is released when the freezer stops working. The component is simply installed on the freezer roof, and in SmartFrost freezers it also saves valuable space inside the compartment. And it has another use – it is also a portable cooler for picnics and trips.
A moment before ordering – safety above all! To ensure perfect function and maintain the longevity of the device, it is important to use only original parts. Non-original parts may not fit the exact dimensions, not maintain cold effectively, and may cause damage. Now click the 'Check Model Compatibility' button at the top of the page and our system will immediately confirm that the part is suitable for you.
What is the role of the cold storage tank and why is it important?
The cold storage tank is a physical “cold bank” – a gel component located in the freezer roof, which absorbs cold during normal operation and releases it when the appliance is switched off. Liebherr calls this technology SmartFrost – intelligent cold management that combines excellent insulation with active thermal storage. During a power outage, the component slows down the temperature rise in the compartment and allows frozen food to be kept safe for consumption for a significant period of time.
Why an original cold storage tank?
✅ Exact OEM dimensions 175x175x46 mm – fits perfectly into the cabin roof
✅ Liebherr-approved gel material – optimal cold retention
✅ Dual-use capability – inside the freezer and outside as a portable cooler
✅ Original OEM product with manufacturer-approved quality
⚠️ A non-original cold storage container may not fit the size of the compartment roof, lose storage capacity more quickly, and jeopardize food protection in the event of a power outage.
From the experience of our technicians, freezers with a missing or damaged cold storage tank lose temperature twice as fast during a power outage compared to freezers with a working tank. The difference between food that is preserved and food that is thrown away.

✅ Compatible models
The part is suitable for the following models (make sure it matches the E-Nr number on the model sticker):
- GN1064
- GP1064
- GP1213
General series: Liebherr GP, GN
Where is the model sticker (E-Nr) on a Liebherr freezer?
In freestanding freezers – on the left inner wall. In chest freezers – on the upper right side of the outer wall.
🔧 How do you install the cold storage tank?
Simple and quick installation – requires no tools and does not require disconnecting from the power supply. This is a direct “clip” installation to the roof of the freezer compartment.
Installation steps:
- Open the freezer door.
- Adjust the container to the rails/grabs on the roof of the freezer compartment.
- Press until it clicks – the container locks into place.
- Close the door.
That's it. Installation takes about 30 seconds. The tank begins to accumulate cold immediately when the device returns to normal operation.
Using a portable cooler: Take the container out of the freezer (after it has cooled down), put it in a cooler bag – and it's ready for a picnic.
💡 Tip from the experts
In the experience of our technicians, many customers only notice that the container is missing or broken when there is a power outage – and then it is too late. It is recommended to check once every 6 months that the container is firmly seated in the compartment roof and is not transparent (increased transparency indicates loss of gel material). A fuller freezer maintains the temperature better during a power outage – if the freezer is half empty, add frozen water bottles as a supplement next to the cold storage container. Both actions together double the time the food is protected.
❓ Frequently Asked Questions
How long does the cold storage tank maintain the temperature during a power outage?
The protection time depends on the freezer filling and the ambient temperature. The container slows down the temperature rise and complements the insulation capacity of the appliance. A full freezer with a proper container keeps frozen food safe for a significantly longer period of time than one without a container. Liebherr specifies the “storage time in the event of a fault” as a measurable data for each model in the official documentation.
Is the 7422838 cold storage tank suitable for all Liebherr freezers?
No – the part is intended for GP and GN series only. Models GN1064, GP1064 and GP1213 have approved compatibility. For other models, check the E-Nr number that appears on the model sticker inside the freezer. Different dimensions between series may prevent proper installation.
Can the container also be used outside the freezer?
Yes – this is one of the advantages of the component. After the container has accumulated cold in the freezer, it can be pulled out and used as gel ice in a cooler bag for trips, the beach and picnics. It does not get wet – unlike regular ice – and keeps cold for hours.
What is the difference between an original Liebherr tank and a replacement tank?
An original container comes in the exact dimensions for the cell roof (175x175x46 mm) and is approved for the required gel material. A non-original container may not fit in size, not accumulate cold with the required efficiency, and may miss the critical moment – a power outage.
